A woman has tragically lost her life after a member of a local security team assigned to guard a ‘galamsey’ mining site fired shots into a pit at Nyameadom in the Ashanti Region.
In addition to the fatality, six others were injured by gunfire.
According to sources, the women were working in the galamsey pit when the shooting took place. Reports suggest that the guard, attempting to force the women to leave, fired what he intended to be a warning shot. However, the shot reportedly went astray, hitting the women instead.
Following the incident, enraged residents of the area allegedly set fire to an excavator belonging to the illegal miners in protest.
