The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has inaugurated the second phase of the Tsatsadu micro-hydropower plant, situated at the Tsatsadu waterfalls in Alavanyo, located in the Hohoe District of the Volta Region. This phase of the project was executed by Ghanaian engineers from the Bui Power Authority (BPA) and funded primarily through internally generated resources.
Phase I of the Tsatsadu Generating Station (TGS), which was officially launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in December 2020, generated 45 kilowatts (KW) of electricity. The newly commissioned Phase II adds an additional 75 KW, boosting the total power output.
During the commissioning, Vice President Bawumia, who also opened a new Centre of Excellence built by the BPA for practical engineering training, highlighted the government’s commitment to expanding the country’s energy sources. He emphasized the importance of reducing Ghana’s dependence on oil and gas by incorporating alternative energy sources into the electricity generation mix.
Dr. Bawumia, who is also the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the upcoming December elections, praised the BPA for diversifying its energy production, especially with the recent completion of a 5 MW solar plant at the Bui Dam. He also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding renewable energy if elected.
“As stated in my 2024 election manifesto, I plan to introduce 2,000 MW of solar power into our energy grid. This initiative will lower electricity costs, reduce living expenses, and create jobs through the local production of solar panels,” Dr. Bawumia said.
Kofi Dzamesi, Chief Executive Officer of the Bui Power Authority, revealed that the BPA is considering the development of additional micro-hydro projects, including further work at the Tsatsadu waterfalls, to increase power supply to the national grid.
Support for Hohoe EP SHS
In a separate event, Vice President Bawumia fulfilled his earlier promise to provide the Hohoe EP Senior High School’s Cadet Corps with essential equipment. At the school’s 60th-anniversary celebration in May 2023, Dr. Bawumia had been impressed by the precision of the Cadet Corps and pledged to supply them with logistics.
On Sunday, October 20, 2024, during a brief ceremony at the school, he delivered uniforms, boots, scarves, and other supplies to the Corps, making good on his promise.
“Last year, I made a commitment to you, and today I’m here to honor it,” said Dr. Bawumia. “I’ve also heard your request for a school bus, and God willing, when I become president next year, you will have a brand-new bus.”
