The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has instructed its members to end their ongoing strike by October 29, 2024.
The strike, which has spanned several weeks, has caused major disruptions to academic activities across public universities in the country. UTAG members began their industrial action on October 10, 2024, in response to what they viewed as the government’s failure to adequately address the pressing issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which has led to widespread destruction of rivers and forest reserves.
In a recent statement, the NEC called on UTAG members to return to work, signaling a resolution to the strike. Students at the affected tertiary institutions are expected to resume their studies starting on November 1, 2024.
