Trump Declares Victory After Fox News Projects His Presidential Win

Republican Donald Trump has declared victory in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, following a Fox News projection that he defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, marking a remarkable political comeback four years after he departed the White House.

“America has entrusted us with a powerful, unprecedented mandate,” Trump announced early Wednesday to a cheering crowd of supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Standing beside him were his vice-presidential running mate, Senator JD Vance, as well as Republican leaders and members of his family.

During his speech, Trump took time to express gratitude to Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, who reportedly contributed around $120 million to support Trump’s campaign. Trump indicated that he plans to appoint Musk to head a government efficiency commission.

While other media outlets had yet to confirm the race outcome, Trump was nearing victory after securing key battleground states like Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia, while maintaining leads in four other states, according to Edison Research.

Kamala Harris did not address her supporters, who had gathered at Howard University, her alma mater. However, her campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond briefly spoke to the crowd after midnight, emphasizing, “We still have votes to count,” and promising that Harris would make a public statement on Wednesday.

Trump’s performance in this election showed gains across a broad spectrum of voters, even surpassing his 2020 results in both rural and urban areas.

In Congress, Republicans regained control of the U.S. Senate after flipping Democratic-held seats in West Virginia and Ohio. However, control of the House of Representatives remains uncertain, with Republicans holding a slight majority.

Trump entered Election Day with a 50-50 chance of reclaiming the presidency, a dramatic rebound from January 6, 2021, when many believed his political career was over following the storming of Congress by his supporters.

According to exit polls from Edison Research, Trump made significant inroads among Hispanic voters, traditionally a Democratic-leaning group, as well as among lower-income households who have felt the impact of rising costs over the past four years. Nationally, Trump won 45% of Hispanic voters, a 13-point improvement from 2020, while Harris led with 53%.

Polling also showed that 31% of voters identified the economy as their top issue, with Trump receiving 79% of those votes, compared to Harris’s 20%. About 45% of voters stated that their financial situation was worse than it was four years ago, with 80% of these voters favoring Trump.

Financial markets responded late on Tuesday, with U.S. stock futures, the dollar, and Treasury yields climbing, while bitcoin also rose — moves analysts linked to a potential Trump victory.

Regardless of the final result, this election has been historic. If elected, Trump, at 78, would be the first president in over a century to serve non-consecutive terms and would also set a record as the oldest elected president. Alternatively, if Harris wins, she would become the first female president and the first Black and South Asian American to hold the office.
