Ntim Fordjour Accuses Mahama, NDC of Encouraging LGBTQ+ Acts at National Monument

Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has lashed out at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President John Dramani Mahama, blaming them for what he sees as a moral decline reflected in the recent display of a same-sex couple kissing beneath Ghana’s Independence Arch.

Taking to Twitter on the morning of Thursday, June 26, Rev. Ntim Fordjour criticized the widely circulated photos as deeply offensive and disrespectful to Ghana’s national values and cultural identity. He claimed that such behavior is the result of a permissive attitude toward LGBTQ+ advocacy under the leadership of the Mahama administration.

“Under Mahama & the NDC, a foreign gay couple brazenly disrespects our national monument—kissing under Independence Arch while displaying the Ghana flag. This is a direct affront to our national dignity and values,” the MP posted.

The uproar follows a social media campaign by South African partners Lue and Rue, who shared images of themselves kissing at prominent Ghanaian landmarks, including the Independence Arch. The #ShowGhanaLove campaign was intended as a form of protest against Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ legislation.

However, the move has sparked backlash from the Ghanaian public, many of whom consider the couple’s actions disrespectful and provocative, particularly in a society where same-sex relationships remain widely opposed.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour believes the incident underscores the importance of passing legislation aimed at protecting the country’s moral and cultural foundations. He reiterated his strong backing for the anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently under consideration in Parliament.

“This nonsense must end. The bill will put a stop to it,” he asserted, vowing to stand firm in defense of what he described as Ghana’s traditional and religious values.
