NDC training thugs to disrupt elections in Ashanti Region – NPP declares

New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating plans to destabilize the Ashanti Region ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The NPP alleges that these activities, allegedly overseen by retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Kofi Boakye, are aimed at creating voter intimidation and reducing turnout in areas considered strongholds of the NPP.

During a press briefing in Accra, the NPP’s National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye, cautioned the NDC against any actions that might threaten peace in the region, warning that such attempts would face strong resistance and ultimately fail.

“Our intelligence indicates that for several months now, the NDC has been training groups of thugs under the pretext of private security programs in certain communities, including the Obuasi East Constituency,” he disclosed. “These individuals are being groomed specifically to disrupt the election process in the Ashanti Region, which remains the NPP’s stronghold.”

Nana Boakye also revealed that a recent meeting was allegedly held on November 11, 2024, by the NDC’s mining committee, chaired by former Minerals Commission CEO Toney Aubynn. According to the NPP, the secret gathering took place at Mawuli Hotel in the Obuasi West Municipality, where discussions centered around recruiting pro-NDC small-scale miners into a vigilante group named the “Eagle Force.” The group is purportedly being prepared to cause disruptions at NPP polling stations on election day.

The NPP, however, dismissed accusations from the NDC that the party is working with Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, to manipulate the election in the Ashanti Region.

“These claims from the NDC’s Communication team are entirely baseless, lacking even a shred of credible evidence,” Nana Boakye stated. “This is yet another desperate ploy by the NDC to stoke tensions and divert public attention from their own failures.”

He further criticized the NDC for tarnishing the reputation of a respected military officer without any substantiating proof. “You accuse a reputable officer of collusion, yet provide no evidence. How do you expect anyone to take such allegations seriously?” he added.

The NPP remains resolute that such tactics by the NDC will not deter its efforts to secure victory in the 2024 elections.
