The Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the Mahama administration of abusing state institutions to harass and intimidate members of the previous government and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a forceful statement, the Minority condemned what they described as the abuse of power and political persecution, stressing that such actions threaten democratic values.
“The Minority Caucus strongly condemns the growing misuse of State Institutions by the NDC Government to intimidate and persecute political opponents,” the statement read.
“This disturbing development not only undermines our democracy but also distracts from the key issues this government promised to address,” it continued.
The statement further argued that the Mahama government had shifted its focus from addressing national concerns to engaging in political witch-hunts as a distraction from their failure to fulfill electoral promises.
“This government has chosen to focus on political persecution rather than fulfilling the promises made to the people of Ghana. The NDC promised to ‘reset’ the economy, ease the burden of the cost-of-living crisis with a 24-hour economy, create jobs for the youth, reduce unemployment, and invest in modernizing the country’s infrastructure,” the Minority noted.
“Instead of addressing these urgent priorities—commitments they cannot escape—they have strayed from their mandate, using State Institutions as tools for targeting political rivals, sowing division, and shifting attention away from their inability to govern effectively.”
The statement also criticized comments by President Mahama, who alleged that the Akufo-Addo administration had “criminally mismanaged” Ghana’s economy, accusing the President of making such remarks to justify state-backed persecution of political opponents.
