Kamala Harris yet to concede as Trump barrels towards victory

Kamala Harris appears to be nearing defeat in her bid to become the first female U.S. president, as Republican candidate Donald Trump is projected to win several pivotal battleground states.

Harris has not yet conceded the race, even as CBS, the BBC’s U.S. partner, suggests that Trump is on the brink of a historic win.

The vice president had planned to make an appearance on election night at Howard University in Washington, D.C., her alma mater, but canceled it as early results increasingly favored Trump. CBS projections indicate Trump has now secured the critical states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.

The Republican candidate is also poised to claim other key swing states, such as Wisconsin and Michigan. Trump maintained expected victories across traditionally conservative states, stretching from Florida to Idaho, while Harris captured liberal strongholds like New York and California.

While Harris was initially set to address her supporters, campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond announced shortly after midnight that she would not appear. The lively mood earlier in the evening at Howard University had already turned somber as Trump won two swing states.

From Harris headquarters, Democratic fundraiser Lindy Li described the atmosphere as “pretty grim right now” in a conversation with the BBC.
