It Will Be a Disaster if Mahama Removes the Chief Justice – Prof. Stephen Adei

Professor Stephen Adei, the former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), has voiced his concerns about the potential dismissal of the Chief Justice by President-elect John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview with TV3 on Sunday, December 23, 2024, Professor Adei highlighted the serious implications such a decision could have on the country’s judicial independence and democratic foundations.

He explained that interfering with the judiciary, particularly through the removal of its leader, would establish a troubling precedent that could weaken the public’s trust in the judicial system.

“Should Mr. Mahama go ahead with the removal of the Chief Justice, it would spell disaster,” he warned. “This would institutionalize a dangerous trend that could harm Ghana’s governance in the long term. We must avoid politicizing our judiciary, as it is a vital pillar of our democracy.”

Professor Adei stressed the importance of shielding the judiciary from political influence, urging leaders to prioritize the integrity of institutions over partisan interests.

He further appealed to all stakeholders to ensure that decisions regarding judicial appointments and removals strictly adhere to constitutional principles and uphold justice. Any deviation, he warned, could significantly undermine Ghana’s democratic progress.
