Why you can’t watch all the World Cup matches live

Tongues have started wagging as to why no local television network is airing ALL the 64 games in the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

This is the situation;

  1. The TV rights are in 2 types. Satellite and Free To Air. Satellite rights (DSTV) entitle you to view all 64 games while FTA rights entitle TV stations in Ghana to show only 28 games. So if you are watching an FTA station in Ghana like GTV or TV3, please dont expect to watch all 64 games. All things being equal you will get only 28 games to watch.
  2. For the past three years, Government does not bear the full costs of FTA TV rights. The FTA stations cover part of the cost by advertising and Government subsidizes by 50%. When the FTA stations pay their 50% the state tops up with 50%. FTAs get to keep all the profits on advertising sales beyond the 50% they contribute.

For the Qatar World Cup, FTAs have agreed with Government to pay 50% while the state pays 50%. Beyond that, the FTA channels will keep all profits they make on advertising.

It is instructive to note that the state has paid its part of the bargain, the 50% waiting for the television stations to come up with their half.

If you are not getting all 64 games to watch, ask your FTA channel if they have paid for their 50% from the adverts sold. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that FTA channels pay their 50% so you can watch all the 28 games to which Ghanaian FTA channels are entitled.
