JEAN MENSA HAS DISTINGUISHED HERSELF AS THE BEST EC CHAIRPERSON IN RECENT HISTORY

You may consider this delivery of mine about Jean Mensa to be filled with grandiloquence but the fact remains that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission has been outstanding in the performance of her duties.

No sooner had she been named as the Chairperson of the EC than the NDC began pelting stones in her direction.

They have resisted every single move Jean Mensa has made in her desire to get the country a credible register for purposes of our elections.

They have used unprintable words and descriptions at her. She has been accused of being in bed with the ruling New Patriotic Party.

A cursory look at the timeframe she has manned the Electoral Commission in relation to the attacks she has received depicts her as the most vilified Electoral Commissioner in our recent history.

Jean Mensa did not suffer verbal abuses from only the NDC, some civil society organizations joined in the bandwagon and took her to the cleaners.

COVID-19 made an uninvited call on us. The havoc the deadly pandemic has wreaked on humanity cannot be underestimated. Every activity was affected by the dire effects of this alien ailment.

The EC had plans to compile a new register and gave dates for same. COVID-19’s disruptive moves altered these plans. In an ideal situation, this should have led to the cancellation of the exercise but that would have had some consequential outcomes the country couldn’t have embraced.

Ghana would have plunged into a constitutional crisis if the 2020 elections were not held since there are no provisions in the Constitution that stipulates another avenue to continue with our governance system in an event of a natural disaster or pestilence.

Jean Mensa mustered pluck, took steps to protect Ghanaians who would turn up to register. The backlashes from the opposition NDC and some CSOs were enormous.

Against these odds and vituperation, Jean Mensa stood her grounds, conducted the registration exercise, paving way for the country to go to the polls on December 7.

In about 15 days, Ghanaians line up to elect their president and Members of Parliament. Jean Mensa has made available the complete voters’ register roll online for every Ghanaian to check his or her name.

This is a novelty and it is a feather in the cap of Jean Adukwei Mensa as it establishes her as the best amongst her peers as far as the chairmanship position of the Electoral Commission is concerned.

The attack dogs, those who criticized her for no apparent reasons, those who hate her for their partisan reasons and those who genuinely critiqued her work, what do they say about this wondrous development at the EC spearheaded by Jean Mensa? Love her or hate her, Jean Adukwei Mensa has been phenomenal in her work as EC Chairperson.
