Idris Elba Plans to Relocate to Africa to Boost Film Industry

British actor Idris Elba has revealed his intention to move to Africa within the next decade, aiming to support the continent’s expanding film industry.

In an interview with the BBC, the 52-year-old actor, widely known for his performances in The Wire and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, expressed his commitment to strengthening Africa’s film sector. Elba emphasized the importance of Africans taking charge of their own storytelling and controlling the narratives that define the continent.

With roots in Ghana and Sierra Leone through his parents, Elba is spearheading two significant film studio projects—one located in Zanzibar and the other in Accra, Ghana. He noted that to make a meaningful impact on the industry, he would need to be physically present in Africa. “I believe I’ll make the move within the next five to ten years, if all goes well. I need to be here, on the continent,” Elba stated.

His relocation plans include living in multiple cities, such as Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar, with the goal of fostering a deeper understanding of Africa’s rich cultural diversity through film. Elba highlighted the necessity for Africans to be involved in every stage of filmmaking, from production to distribution.

While acknowledging the abundance of talent in Africa’s film industry, Elba pointed out challenges like limited infrastructure. He urged governments to create supportive environments that would nurture the film sector, underscoring the industry’s potential to reshape global perceptions of Africa through its stories.
