“I Haven’t Opposed Them Yet; I’m Allowing Them Time to Settle – Minority Leader”

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has stated that while he leads the opposition, he is currently giving the government room to establish itself rather than opposing it outright. He emphasized that the time for a more confrontational approach has not arrived yet.

In an interview with an Accra-based TV station, which was monitored by Happyghana.com, Afenyo-Markin reflected on the past, recalling how the National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority had made life difficult for his party when it was in power. This experience seems to influence his current, more tempered approach to opposition.

His remarks indicate that, although he is adopting a wait-and-see attitude for now, he may shift to a more vigorous stance later on.

I’m saying that for the NDC, I, Kwamena, haven’t opposed them. I’ve given them the space to begin their governance. If you look at the records since 1997, this is the first time ministers are undergoing vetting so swiftly. I did face some criticism from my own party, but I defended my position. Having been in government before, now that I’m in opposition, what do I gain by frustrating them? he explained.

Afenyo-Markin also took the opportunity to commend Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga for his diplomatic approach and his efforts to foster cooperation and understanding between the Majority and Minority groups in Parliament.
