Gabby Otchere Darko Urges Parliament to Prevent Chaos on Tuesday

Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, a key figure within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on Parliament to ensure that its session on Tuesday, October 22, remains orderly and free from chaos.

In a Facebook post shared on Sunday, October 20, Otchere Darko appealed for calm amid increasing political tensions following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. His remarks come as the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament has threatened to occupy the Majority side, despite a Supreme Court ruling that stayed the Speaker’s declaration.

The Speaker’s ruling has created a heated standoff between the two sides of Parliament, with the Minority warning of potential action during the upcoming session.

The Supreme Court’s ruling, issued on Thursday, temporarily halted the Speaker’s decision, preventing any immediate changes to the composition of Parliament. The ruling came after an application was filed for a stay of execution on the Speaker’s declaration.

Otchere Darko’s appeal for calm follows concerns that the rising tensions could lead to conflict within Parliament. He urged both factions to respect the rule of law and work together to protect Ghana’s democratic stability.

“Parliament must, by all means, avoid a situation of seeming chaos and anarchy on Tuesday. I suggest the two Leaders and Speaker meet before then to agree, or agree to disagree, on the next steps. Not long to Dec 7, let maturity be our guide and guard,” he wrote in his post.

His message emphasizes the need for dialogue and cooperation to prevent the escalating situation from undermining the nation’s democratic principles.
