Oforikrom Member of Parliament, Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, has criticised the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for failing to align its actions with the policies and campaign messages presented by the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the elections.
Dr. Marfo pointed out that inconsistencies between the government’s policies and Dr. Bawumia’s pledges created confusion among the electorate and weakened the party’s campaign efforts.
“Dr. Bawumia made it clear during his campaign that LGBTQ+ would not be tolerated under his leadership. That was a firm and timely message,” Dr. Marfo stated. “However, President Akufo-Addo missed the opportunity to back this stance by signing it into law, which created the perception that the President and his Vice President were not aligned.”
The legislator also addressed the controversial E-Levy, which Dr. Bawumia pledged to abolish if elected. “For someone who has been a key advocate for digitalisation, the E-Levy was a major setback. Yet, the President endorsed it, which made it a source of frustration for many Ghanaians,” he said.
Dr. Marfo argued that these contradictions sent mixed messages to the public, reducing confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s promises. “As the saying goes, ‘What you are doing is so loud, I cannot hear what you are saying.’ If the current government, which has the authority now, cannot implement what Dr. Bawumia is proposing, why should Ghanaians trust that he will be able to deliver on those promises as President?” he questioned.
Expressing his disappointment, Dr. Marfo criticised President Akufo-Addo, who has often referred to himself as Dr. Bawumia’s strongest supporter.
“If he truly supports Dr. Bawumia, he should have taken concrete policy measures to demonstrate that support. If even the President appears to lack confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s message, how can the electorate be expected to believe in it?”
Dr. Marfo stressed that these contradictions and a lack of unified action significantly undermined the NPP’s campaign and weakened its prospects of achieving its goal of “breaking the 8” by winning the upcoming election.
