Akua Donkor, Leader of Ghana Freedom Party, Passes Away at 72

Akua Donkor, the founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has passed away at the age of 72. According to a family member, Donkor died on Monday, October 28, at Ridge Hospital in Accra, a fact confirmed on Tuesday, October 29.

Known for her dynamic role in Ghanaian politics, Akua Donkor was a dedicated advocate for the rights of farmers and women, drawing attention through her bold, outspoken style. Her efforts resonated deeply with grassroots communities, who viewed her as a powerful voice for their needs.

Throughout her career, Donkor contested the presidency several times, displaying unwavering determination despite financial challenges. She was listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Her political journey began when she was elected as Assemblywoman for Herman in the Ashanti region. Her first bid for the presidency came in 2012 as an independent candidate, though she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission for failing to meet certain eligibility criteria, a decision she contested but did not pursue legally. Instead, she offered her support to Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

In 2016, she faced another setback when a fire destroyed her party’s headquarters in Kabu, in the Eastern Region, which also prevented her from competing in that election. Despite these challenges, she persisted in her political pursuits, leaving a legacy as a tireless advocate for marginalized communities.

With just 39 days remaining before the 2024 general elections, she had been preparing her campaign, which featured promises of free vehicles for journalists, duty-free services at ports, free education, and increased support for farmers.

Following her passing, tributes from across Ghana have poured in, with many honoring her impact and extending condolences to her family, friends, and supporters.
