Afenyo-Markin: NPP Will Not Allow ‘Lawless NDC’ to Disrupt Ghana’s Peace

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not permit the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to create disorder or threaten the stability of Ghana. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, October 22, Afenyo-Markin clarified that the NPP’s decision to leave the Parliamentary Chamber earlier that day was a deliberate choice to avoid conflict.

The walkout followed a dispute in Parliament, where NDC MPs occupied seats designated for the Majority. This tension arose after Speaker Alban Bagbin’s ruling on October 17, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant. The NPP challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, which subsequently issued a stay of execution.

Afenyo-Markin, addressing the media, accused the NDC of attempting to provoke the NPP into a confrontation to destabilize the country. “We will not give them [NDC] the chance to act lawlessly or disrupt Ghana’s peace. Our retreat was a conscious effort to prevent the chaos they were trying to incite,” he explained.

He reiterated that the NPP would maintain its composure and wait for Speaker Bagbin’s guidance before making any further decisions. “The NPP has a tradition of lawfulness. Our party has always prioritized peace, and we will not provide the NDC with the platform they are seeking to act lawlessly.”

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the NPP’s actions are rooted in a commitment to Ghana’s peace and stability. “We know Ghanaians are going about their daily activities, including those in academia, and we care about them. While there’s politics, we will conduct it in a civil manner.”

He concluded by reinforcing the NPP’s peaceful stance: “The NPP is a peaceful party, and we will not allow anyone to disturb the peace in this country.”
