Afenyo-Markin Claims NDC Faces Internal Tensions Over Mahama’s Successor

Outgoing Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that discussions about who will succeed President-elect John Dramani Mahama as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have already begun, even before Mahama is sworn in for his four-year term.

Afenyo-Markin claimed that signs of internal strife within the NDC have emerged, with some Members of Parliament already engaging in conversations about future leadership. “On Monday in Parliament, we witnessed a few things. We hear and see a lot in Parliament. Their internal leadership struggle has already begun, with campaigns starting for who will take over after Mahama,” he stated.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, Afenyo-Markin refrained from naming the MPs involved in these discussions but indicated that this development would have implications for the 2028 elections.

He expressed confidence that Ghanaians would soon recognize what he described as the true character of the NDC and potentially regret giving them power in the recently concluded general election.

John Dramani Mahama, who won the December 7 election with over six million votes, is constitutionally limited to one term. According to Afenyo-Markin, the early maneuvering within the NDC reflects deeper divisions that could shape the party’s future trajectory.
