Following the contentious issues surrounding the vetting of some ministerial nominees by the Appointment Committee of Parliament, Africa Democracy Watch, (ADW), has conducted a survey on the performance of the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, to find out how he is perceived by Ghanaians.
The survey that sampled 740 respondents in the two major cities, showed that 85% of the people expressed satisfaction and support for the leader of the opposition NPP in Parliament.
In a report made available to this media outlet by Africa Democracy Watch, Afenyo-Markin’s high approval stems from the relevance of the questions he asks the nominees.
“Majority of the respondents indicated that the Minority Leader has been asking the most important questions, questions that put the integrity of the nominees to test” part of the report revealed.
“But for the Minority Leader, respondents wouldn’t have known that Sam George and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa have never worked apart from being MPs, yet they are filthy rich. Where did they get their riches from? It is very worrying to note that the wives of these two MPs have been taking care of them all these years, and this, we found out from respondents, cannot be the truth” the report further explained.
According to the report, some of the respondents expressed shock at the level of dishonesty by some of the nominees and the deliberate attempts by the Chairman of the Appointment Committee to shield nominees from being interrogated.
“In the face of these setbacks, Afenyo-Markin and his team of NPP MPs have succeeded in exposing some of the nominees for being corrupt. How can these corrupt nominees fight corruption?” the report asked.
The remaining 15% of respondents said they’re not satisfied with the work of the committee in its entirety. They believe nothing good will come out of the vetting.
